How do you deal with an abusive supervisor who's terminally ill?

I'm in a situation where I recognize the person is in pain and I can respect what he's going to. Unfortunately he's so arrogant and condescending it's driving me crazy. He never praises for work well done; rather he focuses on the tiniest faults. How should I deal with this situation?
